Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim must accept the fact that the era of him becoming Malaysia’s Prime Minister had ended long ago.
He said the PKR candidate for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election had previously been chosen personally by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to join the government, and had in fact been appointed acting Prime Minister before being expelled in 1998.

Anwar’s claims that he would become Prime Minister on Sept 16 were merely wishful thinking, he said at a function at Kampung Tanjung Putus, near here today.

As such, he urged the constituents in Permatang Pauh not to be easily swayed by the claims that Anwar would necome prime minister if he were to win the Permatang Pauh by-election on Tuesday.

Russian parliament backs independence for Georgia separatists

The Russian parliament voted overwhelmingly on Monday to recognise the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions -- while President Dmitry Medvedev linked the Georgia conflict to tensions over another separatist region.
The European Union, which has criticised Russia's military intervention, called a special summit on the Georgia crisis. Many European nations expressed concern at the Russian parliament vote to recognise South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent.
With Russian troops still inside Georgia and tensions heightened by the arrival in a Georgian port of a US warship carrying aid, Russia's two parliament chambers approved a resolution calling on Medvedev formally to recognise the two regions.

Anwar wins crucial by-election by overwhelming margin

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has won a crucial by-election that will see his return to parliament after a decade long absence, according to news reports.

The seat was held by his wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail during his political exile after he was sacked in 1998 and jailed on charges of sodomy and corruption. She stood aside, triggering a by-election, in the latest step of the opposition leader's plan to topple the government with the help of defectors from the ruling party.

Malaysian opposition declares by-election victory for Anwar

Malaysia's opposition declared its leader Anwar Ibrahim had won a "landslide" victory Tuesday in an by-election to return him to parliament after a decade-long absence.

Anwar, who has made a stunning comeback after being sacked as deputy premier and jailed on sodomy and corruption charges, said he was now on track to seize power from a weakened government.

"We declare victory, the margin is very huge," said Tian Chua, information chief of Anwar's Keadilan party which leads a three-member opposition alliance.

"I think it's a landslide victory,".

Chua said that with half of the vote counted, Anwar had garnered at least 65 percent of the ballots and that the figure could rise as high as 70 percent once all the 38,144 votes cast were tallied.

Early results from the official count showed Anwar had won 12,748 votes, against 5,380 for his opponent from the Barisan Nasional coalition, which has dominated Malaysian politics for half a century.

Malaysia Today

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr does not agree with the Communication and Multimedia Commission's move to block access to the Malaysia Today website.

He said the Government broke its promise and had openly shown it could meddle with the security of the Internet.

He said in his website, chedet.com, that such an action exposed "a degree of oppressive arrogance worthy of a totalitarian state", and that the Government would soon lose credibility and respect among the people.

Dr Mahathir said that he did not often agree with Malaysia Today and its editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin, whom he said had been sometimes quite irresponsible. However, he said court action had been taken against Raja Petra, who was not above the law.

He warned the Government that although it had the power now, it may one day lose it and this would happen because of the Government's obsession to censor alternative views.

PUTRAJAYA: State governments have requested more financial aid from the federal administration in the first National Finance Council meeting of the year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said besides asking for more allocation, the various state Mentri Besar and Chief Ministers had also asked for their previous loans to be converted into government grants.

"The state governments suggested that we give them a larger allocation, particularly when we decided to give civil servants bonuses and pay increases.

"This is because according to them, such bonuses and pay increases are actually extra financial burden to the state governments and thus, do not have enough financial allocation for it.
